Truro City made a winning start to their pre-season campaign with a dominant 5-0 victory over Falmouth Town in the Aubrey Wilkes Trophy on July 12. The result gave assistant manager Stewart Yetton exactly what he wanted ahead of the club’s return to the National League South, where they open against Maidenhead United on August 8.
What happened in the friendly?
City’s pre-season curtain-raiser saw Harvey Greenslade and Luke Jephcott each score twice, while Tyler Harvey-returning from injury-opened the scoring inside three minutes. Falmouth, managed by new boss John Fabby, struggled to trouble goalkeeper Aiden Stone in a one-sided affair. Falmouth were missing several regular starters, yet pushed City hard in patches, forcing the hosts to grind out chances.
Yetton told reporters: “The first couple of weeks have been really tough. The lads have worked brilliantly in training so it was nice to get a game and mix it up a little bit. It was a worthwhile exercise for us. The first two-three games are about trying to rotate those minutes as much as we can just to ease the boys back in. Obviously, they wouldn’t have played for two months.”
Why it matters for Truro City
The win keeps City’s momentum building ahead of their National League South return after a tough season that saw them finish 24th in England’s fifth tier with 34 points from 46 games. Their recent form reads WWLLL, including a 2-0 win at Aldershot Town on April 25, and they sit 74 points behind league leaders York. The club’s festive fixtures include home clashes with Torquay United on Boxing Day and Weston-super-Mare two days later.
What comes next for the Tinners?
John Askey’s side face Exmouth Town on Tuesday before hosting Exeter City at the Truro City Stadium on Saturday. Their league campaign kicks off at home to Maidenhead United on August 8, with the regular season ending at Dover Athletic on April 24. Easter fixtures include a Good Friday trip to Weston and a return to Plainmoor to face Torquay United three days later. The home campaign concludes against Farnborough on April 17.
League standing: 24th in England National League, 34 pts, 8W-10D-28L from 46 games, recent form WLLDL.
