John Askey is confident Truro City can be in the promotion mix again this season. The manager believes his squad is better prepared for the challenge after their first full-time campaign ended in relegation.
Askey's side have started the new National League South season unbeaten, taking four points from matches against Maidenhead United and Chelmsford City. The 61-year-old told reporters that the fitness levels are improved and the team is ready to compete. "We're hoping we're going to be competing at the right end of the table," Askey said. "There are teams throwing big money at it, but I don't think there's too much difference between any of the teams again, so we just have to make sure we're in amongst it."
He acknowledged the difficulty of the early schedule, which pitted Truro against last season's play-off side Maidenhead and big-spending Chelmsford. Securing a win and a draw from those fixtures represents a solid foundation. The club is building momentum both on and off the pitch in their third season at their new stadium.
Growing support
Home attendances have been strong, with more than 1,700 fans watching the victory over Maidenhead. A further 1,500 saw the team beat Southampton Under-21s in the National League Cup. Askey sees a direct link between success and growing the fanbase. "There's a real appetite, and I think if we can be successful this season, the crowds will go up," he said. The club is also working to attract younger supporters through community and school outreach programmes.
Askey is now in his third season in charge at Truro City, the club he helped guide to the National League South title in 2024-25. That historic achievement made them the first Cornish club to reach the National League. He retains a strong ambition for the club's future. "I feel Truro is a special football club, unique, and I'm hoping one day the club does get into the Football League," Askey stated. He recognises the geographical challenges but is committed to the long-term project.
The immediate focus is on maintaining their unbeaten start. Truro City's next test is a home game against Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday.
