Truro City's John Askey discusses the club's first professional season, relegation, and plans for improvement. The Tinners have been relegated back to National League South after a grueling season. They had the most away travel of any football team in English history and won seven of their 45 league games. Askey, who led the club to the National League South title last season, believes players will be better next season. The fact that they've gone full-time is a huge thing for the football club, maintaining that. They've just got to get over the season and hopefully it won't be the last time which they're playing in the National League. Truro's rise up the leagues has in many ways caught the club by surprise. They won promotion back to National League South from the Southern League in May 2023 before going up another step two years later. They became fully professional last season, but have struggled to find suitable training facilities and also had to adapt to their grueling travel schedule. It's just I think the circumstances for the football club coming a long way in such a short period of time has proven too much for everyone, added Askey. There's a lot of things that we need to get right if we want to get to become a National League club, but it is difficult because of location and lack of facilities in Cornwall and even in Devon really. So it is difficult to find the facilities that you need for the training to be better, but we'll keep striving. Truro are also coming to the end of just their second season back in Cornwall, after leading a nomadic life while the Truro Community Stadium was built. The club has averaged gates of more than 2,000 this season, far in excess of what Askey says he was told the club might get when he took charge in the summer of 2024. It shows the appetite there is for football at Cornwall and that's the big thing for the football club is that people do want a high standard of football.
